The same thing windows 2007 is also server sounds more proffesional guess 2003 is also server version that home user would likely never use.

The first almost full 32 bit server operating system it replaced windows 2000 needs more ram installed it is 32 bit server hope this helps.

The simple answer is that Microsoft wants it’s customers to upgrade to make more money by making you purchase new software each time they release a new version of the operating system because some of your software will not work on the new operating system.
The more complicated answer is that they have rewritten the operating systems, between Windows 2000 and Windows XP, to take advantage of changes in hardware, software and methodology. XP is supposed to be more secure and less likely to crash than 2000, just as 2000 was more secure and less likely to crash that NT. Also just as some software that worked with Windows NT, didn’t work with Windows 2000, the same thing has occurred with 2000 to XP, and will occur with XP to Vista.
Windows NT came in a workstation version and a server version. Windwos 2000 comes in workstation and server versions. Windows XP is the workstation version and Windows 2003 is a server system. Windows Longhorn will be the server operating system, and Windows Vista will be the operating system for workstations.
