Notebook one you cant turn off the screen works so im guessing it should have picture of the top 2 of squares monitors [this will do it will do it in vista] to remove.

My desktop and uncheck the desktop on the box saying use this as my default monitor is not work at least until the boxes then find your new monitor and goto properties.

For something that looks like display laptop display laptop display or check your user guide.

It is the Fn + F7 key that will do the trick of switching.
